Seasonal: Buffalo Pest Calendar: What Is Active Each Season

Buffalo has four distinct seasons and each one brings a different pest. Use this calendar to see what is active now, what is coming next and which jobs are best done early.

Winter: mice, rats and bed bugs inside heated buildings

Erie County sees freezing nights from late fall through early spring, with deep snow cover for weeks, which keeps mice and rats close to heated buildings. Warm months bring rats out along alleys and garden beds. Winter is the season of mice in walls and basements, rats that moved in from the cold, and bed bugs that spread in apartments and shared housing. Droppings, scratching at night and gnawed packaging are the usual first signs. Trapping and sealing are the right response, and any gap you find now is a gap the next cold snap will use again.

Spring: the thaw shows what winter hid

When the snow melts it reveals burrows along foundations, cracked mortar and gaps around utility lines. Carpenter ants and termites become active, and winged ants or termites indoors on a warm day are a reason to call. Spring is also the best time to fix drainage next to the foundation and to walk the outside of the building.

Summer: ants, wasps, spiders and roaches

Warm weather brings ant trails into kitchens, wasp and hornet nests under eaves and in sheds, spiders in basements and garages, and cockroaches in damp kitchens and apartment buildings. Keep food sealed, fix leaks, and look for nests early, when they are small and easier to treat safely.

Fall: the race to seal before the first freeze

Buffalo's first hard freezes in October and November, often with early lake effect weather, are when mice start moving into basements, garages and kitchens. Late summer and early fall are the best time for exclusion work, because the animals are still outside. Check door sweeps, garage seals, cellar windows and pipe penetrations, and trim back anything touching the walls.

Year round: apartments, restaurants and shared buildings

Shared kitchens, trash rooms and basements keep roaches, mice and bed bugs active in every season. Multi unit buildings and food businesses do best with a scheduled program rather than calling only after a sighting.
